September Slut of the Month: Hether Fortune

Hether Fortune dominates in every sense of the word, helming the dark, visceral punch of San Francisco’s acclaimed Wax Idols while working the whip as a practicing domina. Known for an outspoken, raw sexuality which pervades all her artistic endeavors, Fortune goes beyond the usual Slut Questionnaire to tell us her turn ons, her totems, and her slut idols.

I am: SIR HETHER FORTUNE

By Day: Freak (with coffee)

By Night: Freak (with other stimulants)

My Vices: Life is one big vice. I chain smoke. That’s universally “bad”, right?

My Virtues: None

The Present: Sitting in a dungeon, sighing

The Future: Is unwritten

Favorite Flavor: Cinnamon, Citrus, Hot sauce

Favorite Feeling: sexual and/or romantic bliss

Favorite Fabric: Leather

Substance is: having a strong, weathered heart & something to offer the world that only you can provide

Style is: being able to get dressed in 5 minutes while blindfolded & still look incredible

Slut is: loving yourself enough to take your sexual power into your own hands & abandon social constructs, fear & judgement. Living life on your own terms as you see fit.

What turns you on?

Intellect, humor, androgyny, intoxicating body odor, cool confidence, mirrors, deep watery eyes, a statuesque physique, power exchange, esoteric tendencies, lingerie, being worshipped, being thoroughly impressed, my own reflection & myself in general

What turns you off?

Sloppy kissing, whining, insecurity, masked misogyny, false prophets, face slapping (don’t you dare), close-mindedness, severe co-dependency, big muscles

Favorite piece of erotic lit?

Well, A Spy In The House Of Love by Anais Nin is a classic. I like to read old issues of BIZARRE COMIX & old fetish mags.

Favorite music to fuck to?

White noise or like … NIN. If I’m feeling more “love makey” then maybe that first DEAD CAN DANCE s/t album or some classic classical radio station.

Are you a feminist?

Yes, sex-positive & forward thinking. Let’s move beyond gender.

Do you find that your work as a dom is a way to release a type of creative energy that you can’t through music and art, or is it all drawn from the same wellspring? What part of your personality does it satisfy?

It is all from the same wellspring – absolutely. Though I think that my work as a professional Domina has heightened my sense of theatric artistry and sensuality. The impact play related parts of being a Dominatrix definitely helps me to release a lot of pent up aggression! Haha.

New York City domina Teresa Nasty once wrote: “BDSM is as much about whips and chains as a film is about popcorn and nachos.” Do you agree?

Mostly, yes. I mean..whips & chains DO tend to factor into a particular branch of BDSM. However, a truly gifted player should be able to captivate his/her partner using nothing but the imagination, charm & instincts.

Most interviews you do are on music with a tangential break to talk sex, so if we’re talking sex, how does your music fit in? What are the sexual underpinnings to Wax Idols’ recent release, Discipline + Desire?

WAX IDOLS is a pretty aggressive, sexually charged band. I guess that is because it is a direct extension of myself. Despite what the recent album title may lead you to believe – our latest record has much less to do with sex and much more to do with finding balance amidst chaos. Then again…that is one of the purposes of sex as well. Haha.

How do you feel sexual desire and sexual energy are treated in the San Fran artist community? What about in comparison to other places you’ve lived/traveled/toured?

The Bay Area is an incredibly open, accepting place to be if you are open-minded in general, particularly in regard to sex. The tolerance level for sex-work and overt displays of sexuality is drastically higher here than say…some town in Ohio. I come from the Midwest so yes it is a BIG difference. When I tour, there are certain places that react pretty oddly to the sight of me walking around in a translucent bodysuit. Out here it’s like, no big deal. Hahaha.

What other sluts have inspired you or continue to do so? Who are your slut idols?

Lydia Lunch is an ETERNAL source of inspiration to me. I absolutely cannot imagine a world without her. I met her last year & nearly died of happiness – such a powerful, brilliant & hilarious woman. She’s still smoking hot as well. Nina Hagen, Patti Smith, Marc Almond, The women I work with here at the Dom Haus are beyond inspirational and empowering to be around. I am currently feeling very inspired by an up-and-coming drag queen performer & artist named Najee. We are starting a drag night together in Oakland. Most of the drag queens & transgendered divas I’ve come into contact with throughout my life have inspired me in one way or another. It takes some incredibly intense transformative artistry, bravery & creativity to create LIVING ART. All sluts using these kinds of powers are an inspiration to me.

What’s next for you, sexually, artistically, cosmically?

I’m entering into a more nomadic existence. I’ve got some exciting shows lined up (Friday the 13th of September opening for THE MISSION UK at Regency Ballroom in SF !!) and am hosting a new drag-performance night with my friend Najee in Oakland at The Night Light called FAUXREAL. That launches on September 27th. We have the annual Folsom Street Fair coming up here in SF as well! I’ll be repping my Dom Haus in the daylight – LOOK FOR ME. After that I’ll be in L.A. for a while working on music and just exploring a less familiar place, followed by some tour and yada yada. You know. Trying to live the best & most productive life I can – always.
