“Woke up, it was a Chelsea morning, and the first thing that I knew
There was milk and toast and honey and a bowl of oranges, too
And the sun poured in like butterscotch and stuck to all my senses.”
Every March, I continue my yearly tradition of spring cleaning, and with Joni Mitchell’s soprano in my ear, I begin the task enthusiastically, singing like a girl without a care in the world until I realize my floor, desk, and basically every surface is drowning in clutter. Where did it all come from? What will remain and what should be tossed? March is the first breath of spring and here we are, entering a season of manifestation and unknown possibilities. The magic I do for March is about preparation and setting the stage for all my flowers and desires to bloom. So often in our mundane and spiritual lives we don’t do the prep work and get impatient when things just aren’t happening fast enough for our 21st century lifestyles. There’s always a universal rhythm that ritual work can tap into and this month we’re given a few opportunities to clarify our intentions and make them manifest in due time.
This month we will experience two eclipses. On March 8th we had the Total Solar Eclipse and New Moon in Pisces, which brought all ephemeral emotions fully to the surface to be exposed, healed and released. Since then, like clockwork, the pleasant weather makes me feel like Persephone emerging from the Underworld: golden, fresh and once again ripe with pleasure. Call me romantic but there’s nothing quite like springtime to get your hips gyrating and feet dancing. The Vernal Equinox, or Ostara as some Pagans call it, falls on either March 19th or 20th, depending on your time zone. The Sun enters the mighty and brassy sign of Aries, ready to charge. This lesser Sabbat is a time to bid adieu to winter months and shed whatever physical and personal baggage that’s been camping out in a “maybe” pile on your floor. On Wednesday March 23rd, we experience a Lunar Eclipse and Full Moon in luscious Libra bringing an air of romance, a thirst for justice, and socializing like a butterfly. With the Sun in Aries and the Moon in Libra, it’s also an excellent time to work magic for balance in our mind, body and affairs. Aries rules the head and is often the sign of “me,” while Libra, the only sign represented by an object, the scales, is all about “we.” Think about the relationship you have with yourself and how that can color relationships with others. After engaging in some spring cleaning, enjoy the fruits of your labor and indulge your senses with the following bath.
Springtime Flower Bath
Rosebuds or petals
Organic Milk (1-2 cups)
Honey (the finest possible, give it a good squirt)
Oatmeal (1/4 cup)
Combine any of the fresh (if possible) flowers and herbs and put into a cheesecloth or muslin bag. Pour steaming hot water into the tub and add the bag. Soak in the tub for 30 minutes and visualize yourself as Persephone shedding the cloak of her experiences from the underworld. You can even pop underwater, closing your eyes and feeling the weight of winter, memories and darkness. When you need air, come up and take deep breaths, massaging your skin with the bag of herbs. Like crocuses bursting through the soil, use this time to check in with yourself and feel rejuvenated with all the flora and fauna that March has to offer.
