A Japanese Artist Was Arrested For 3D Printing Her Vagina

We’ve all heard about the theoretical dangers of 3D printing, and in the wrong hands, it could be disastrous. With the ability to re-create just about anything with high precision accuracy, the cutting-edge technology could be used to illegally manufacture machine guns, drugs, or even…vaginas.

Yesterday, Japanese artist Megumi Igarashi was arrested in Tokyo for doing just that, or rather, distributing data through the internet that would allow for the creation of a model of her genitals. The police considered those 1’s and 0’s perverse enough to charge her with obscenity, an allegation which she fervently denies.

Inspired to unmask the female genitalia in a cultural environment that calls for its invisibility, Igarashi has created art based on 3D models of her vagina called “Deco-man”, which stands for “decorative” “manko” (Japanese for pussy).  She is currently soliciting funds to build a boat out of her vagina. (Probably the first and last time you will ever see those words put together in a sentence, so enjoy.)

Japanese speakers can sign this petition to stand in solidarity with her against the obscenity charges. The rest of us can check out Igarashi (also known as “rokudenashi-ko” or “good-for-nothing kid”) speaking about the project to make her pussy seaworthy in this video.
